What election topics are Americans looking up on Google?

When Americans seek information about politics and elections, Google is often their first stop. In 2024, the Associated Press and Google Trends have collaborated to showcase the trending topics in these searches, providing a weekly overview of the election-related subjects being explored across the country and in each state.

Search terms are organized into broader topics, encompassing variations in different languages. For instance, "economy" covers related terms like "economic growth" and "GDP." By tracking these trends over time, you can see what issues are gaining prominence among the American electorate and which ones are fading from attention.

Google’s data offers a detailed analysis of search interest by topic, location, and time. Select a topic, location, and time frame, and the map will display how the topic's interest ranked by state and county for any given week this year.

The most searched topics are scaled from 0 to 100, with 100 indicating the highest search volume for a topic (as shown in the chart above) or the region with the highest search interest for a given topic (as shown in the map below). In the map, counties are scored relative to the county with the highest search volume. In other words, the larger the circle, the greater the search interest in that topic for that state or county during the week.
